Awww…Autumn is just around the corner with crisp days and frosty nights. It’s the time that we gather together and toast to friends and family, share meals, and celebrate the changing of seasons.

And what is absolutely necessary for this annual rite? A warm and inviting gas fireplace that is the centrepiece for gatherings large and small. There’s nothing better than a warm fire to take the chill out of the air and instantly create a welcoming environment.

Now is the Time to Fire Up the Hearth

More than likely, your gas fireplace has been sitting idle since last winter. Now that it’s time to put that gas fireplace to use, it is important to make sure that everything is functioning properly and that all necessary repairs have been made.

Keeping Your Gas Fireplace Well Maintained

While gas fireplaces are safe, with no sparks, creosote build-up, or toxic fumes, it is still important to keep it in good condition and fully functional. Gas fireplaces are easy to operate but require careful review by a licensed professional annually so that you can rest assured that all is well.

Annual Safety Inspection and a Thorough Diagnostic Tune-Up

At least once a year, have a certified technician review your gas fireplace operation and perform a comprehensive tune-up and cleaning, as well as a safety inspection. Be sure that these key points are part of the review (at a minimum):

  • Gas and carbon monoxide (CO) leak testing

  • Review of all fittings and connections

  • Thorough cleaning of logs and interior of the box and glass

  • Inspection and recalibration of the safety controls, thermostat, and switches

  • Measure pressure levels for the gas valves

  • Inspections and adjustments of the burner and pilot assemblies

  • Evaluation of the fan blowers and assemblies

When Gas Fireplace Repairs are Needed

Problems can be discovered during the inspection process or through normal operation. When this occurs, it’s important to use a service company with an outstanding reputation in the Vancouver community and a portfolio of completed and verified work.

Gas fireplace repairs are serious business and require the expert attention afforded by experienced and licensed professionals. Using a qualified service company alleviates any concerns you may have about troubleshooting gas fireplace issues.

What to Expect During Your Repair?

In the Vancouver area, expect guaranteed repairs made by fully licensed professionals who respect your time and your personal environment. Your service technician should arrive as scheduled and have all the required equipment and parts necessary to complete your gas fireplace repair.

Once the repair or maintenance has been completed, you should expect a thorough rundown of the findings and costs, including an overview of things to monitor. This is also a good time to test your fire monitoring system and CO alarm, changing the batteries if necessary.

Questions to Consider About Gas Fireplace Repair in the Vancouver Area

Can I do my own troubleshooting on gas fireplace repairs?

We highly recommended that you contact a repair specialist immediately and leave the troubleshooting to the professionals.  When dealing with gas appliances, it is far too dangerous to try self-diagnosis or repair. It is better to turn off the source of the gas and make the phone call to your fireplace repair specialists as soon as possible.

If you smell gas or rotten eggs, reach out to fortisBC or contact a certified fireplace technician.

My fireplace glass front gets so hot. Is that normal?

Yes, fireplace glass can get up to 500 degrees. Manufacturers are required to provide safety barrier screens that keep children and pets from touching the glass front panels, but it is important to be vigilant about not damaging the glass and exposing loved ones to the potential danger.

I have a pet with long hair; can that cause a problem with my gas fireplace?

Yes, pet hair, dander, and dirt can cause burner failure by clogging the venting that allows oxygen into the system.  Try to keep the area in front of the fireplace clean and free of hair and dust.

My remote isn’t working; what do I do?

There can be several causes of your remote not working, including:

  • You may need new batteries. Most homeowners don’t realize there are two sets of batteries that need maintenance in a gas fireplace.  One set is in the remote itself. The other is in the receiver located either behind or next to the logs in the firebox. You or your fireplace specialist can change these out if necessary.

  • There is air in the gas line. This happens when the system sits idle for an extended period of time.  Simply holding the knob down for a period of time can remedy the problem. If not, contact your gas fireplace repair specialist.

  • The gas may have been turned off at the source. This is especially common at the start of the season when the gas was turned off last Spring. Simply turning on the gas should provide your solution.
